Internews Tajikistan to
Become Media Tajikistan
PARIS, France -- October, 2004:
As a result of differences of opinion with respect to financial and administrative management standards, the membership in Internews International (II, a Paris-based association of media assistance organisations registered on 15 March 1999) of Internews Tajikistan (a Tajikistani NGO registered on 7 June 1999) ceased on 3 October 2003. At the same time, Internews Tajikistan entirely separated itself from the representative office in Tajikistan of Internews Network (USA), and removed from the Internews Network representative office all property belonging to Internews Tajikistan.
In accordance with the rules to which Internews Tajikistan agreed when it became an II member, the name Internews and its logo of a globe encircled with a ribbon are the property of II. Thus, when Internews Tajikistan’s membership in II ceased, its name was to have been changed, and indeed on 16 May 2003 the Internews Tajikistan Council of Founders adopted a decision to change the company’s name to Media Tajikistan. (Internews Network remains a member of II and is therefore authorised to use the Internews name and logo.)
II expresses its concern that, 17 months after the Council of Founders' decision and one year after Internews Tajikistan's departure from II, the Ministry of Justice has not yet processed the necessary documentation to comply with the Council of Founder’s decision to rename itself to Media Tajikistan. It is not known whether Internews Tajikistan has filed with the Ministry of Justice the necessary documentation for this name change.
